For the 2nd Generation Fat Lady Blade Kites has drastically improved the upwind capabilities by designing a new profile shape, which is traditionally found in paraglides. This unique and dynamic design strategy also improves lowend capabilities as well as responsive control in gusty conditions.
While your friends are standing on the beach pretending to be meteorologists, you can be busting all the tricks in your repertoire or carving the waves all to yourself. Fast, powerful, responsive and a thrill to ride, the Fat Lady has made quite the name for herself in the light wind category.
Enter the Fat Lady!
Like all other Blade kites, the Fat Lady is designed to be fast. After almost 2 years in prototyping, her innovative design and is hands down the most dynamic light wind 17m on the market.
What makes the design so special is that it pushes the technical limits of maximum efficiency by linking all aspects of the geometry and construction to work together to conduct the forces of flight. The clearest example of this is the approach to Fat Lady's LE. Typically other big kites rely on a massive LE to maintain their large structure. The Fat Lady has by far the leanest LE on a 17m kite, smaller than typical 12m kites. This provides key performance advances in the power to weight ratio, flying speed, turning speed, and overall handling. This super thin LE is technically possible only when all other elements in the kite such as the canopy, struts, and bridle are optimized to integrate in motion to support the structure. In prototype development, the LE was reduced in increments, and with each reduction all other elements of the kite were consequently redesigned to support it. The Fat Lady takes this strategy to the limit, and by applying it to all aspects of the kite, she produces dynamic performance never before seen at this size.
Skilled riders will get her on the water at around 8 knots, and even beginners can park the her at 10 knots and go. Getting her up off the water you’d swear she was a 9m. The Fat Lady is all about having a good time, take her for a spin, she’s a whole lot of kite!
Close observation of the Fat Lady will reveal how narrow the LE is. Along with a 3 strut design, this greatly reduces the drag and weight on the kite, which leads to greater pop. The changes have been accompanied by pre-emptive strut shape design and positioning. This provides the Fat Lady with a stable system where you can enjoy anything from an old school freeride to wave and even unhooked styles. Go ahead shredder, we dare you to give her a spin.
materials and construction...
Very simply we use the best. High end materials and build construction are an issue of cost, and all of our kites get the same top-end level of construction, so we leave out gimmicks and design trends that don’t prove to deliver performance in our testing, and focus one functional, effective design innovation. Blade is one of the very few companies in the industry that works intimately with its production factories, not just to assure standards of quality and production excellence, but also to develop innovative processes to raise the bar in build quality.
